Symonds Family Tree

Descendants of William Symons

The Symonds family origins are believed to have began in Normandy, and travelled to England in the William the Conquerer era. They settled in Cornwall and became farmers, inn keepers and yeomen. Francis Symonds migrated to Australia in 1848 aboard the" Navarino", arriving in Adelaide in November 1848, with his second wife and the children of two marriages. The family settled at Roselands Farm near Chain of Ponds in the Adelaide Hills, Three of the Children of Francis Symonds married three of the children of James Caust, who was a blacksmith and coach builder. James Caust arrived in Australia aboard the "Recovery" in 1839. He set up businesses in Currie St in Adelaide, Built the "Lord Nelson" hotel on South Road at Black Forest, (now the Avoca Hotel, and still standing). He had a blacksmithing business opposite the hotel. He later moved to Chain of Ponds, and set up a coach building business there. He purchased Buckland Park near Gawler river for farming , but found it useless because of constant flooding he then leased it out for grazing. Both Families are now scattered throughout Australia nad no doubt, the world.
